The world's fourth most populous nation and the largest Islamic state is a vast archipelago of some 17,000 islands that extends 5,150 km from west to east. Just 6,000 of these islands are populated with Jakarta being located on the most populous island of Java. Indonesia lies between the Indian and Pacific Oceans and its located just south of the equator. Indonesia is one of the ten countries that constitute the Association of South East Asian Nations or ASEAN. It shares land borders with Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam (on the island of Borneo/Kalimantan) and New Guinea (on the island of Papua New Guinea). All its other borders are maritime. Jakarta, the capital of the Republic of Indonesia is one of Asia's largest cities and also one of the most vibrant and happening. While the authorities are not really sure of the actual population size, most predictions are around twelve million residents living in Jakarta and the surrounding area. This makes it one of the top 20 cities in the world in terms of population size. With so many people living in such a large area, something is always happening in what is considered one of Asia's liveliest and most vibrant urban destinations. Located on the northwestern coastline of the Indonesian island of Java, Jakarta is more than a place to visit but also a gateway to many of the other destinations scatered across some of the 13,500 islands that comprise the archipelago of the Republic of Indonesia. Visitors to Jakarta often combine their holiday in the bustling city with other destinations on Java including those in the immediate vicinity such as Bogor, Puncak and the 1,000 islands along with more distant cities such as Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Solo and Surabaya. Visitors to Jakarta are attracted to its size, range of activities, its many attractions, bountiful shopping, lively nightlife, accomodation options and its culinary diversity. While big is often associated with congestion plus hustle and bustle, many visitors love it exactly for these very reasons.
